How I nursed all of my children for 7.5 years while running a busy dental practice.
Aug 25, 2022So many of my patients at World Class Dentistry, as well as friends and acquaintances, have asked how I was able to nurse my 3 children while having a busy dental practice as a solo practitioner working full time.
I was lucky enough to find the book by William Sears, M.D. before my first baby was born called Nighttime Parenting. He described a method of never letting your baby ‘cry it out’ by sleeping with your child and having ‘on demand’ feeding. This really resonated with me so I set up my bedroom where my baby and I slept on the floor on a foam mattress. This allowed me to sleep with the baby and be available within seconds to feed the baby without having to trudge down the hall and calm a crying baby.
I was able to fall back to sleep in seconds and many times would wake up much later with the baby asleep. I was able to get a good night sleep and the baby was able to feel loved, secure and well fed. I could go to work with plenty of energy and would pump and save my milk during the day, which would feed my baby while I was away. I slept on the floor so I could move away from the baby to give the baby and myself room to sleep without the worry of the baby falling off the bed or being crushed.
I am a big proponent of this type of parenting because my children felt loved and secure and the family and siblings formed a very close bond. I continued this for the 7.5 years that I nursed my three children while working full time. Also during this time, I became a national speaker and teacher traveling, and yes pumping my way through airports and hotel rooms!
